Brett Lauther Seeks New CFL Team After Roughriders Release

Former Roughrider Brett Lauther Determined to Continue CFL Career

In an exclusive interview, former Saskatchewan Roughriders kicker Brett Lauther has opened up about his recent release from the team and his strong desire to continue his professional football career with another Canadian Football League organization. The veteran kicker, who spent eight seasons with the Roughriders, remains optimistic about his future in the sport despite the unexpected career transition.

A Sudden Transition After Eight Seasons

Lauther was released by the Roughriders in February 2026, just days before he was due to receive an off-season roster bonus. The 35-year-old Nova Scotia native had been a mainstay on the Saskatchewan roster since taking over as the team's primary kicker in 2018, appearing in 114 regular-season games and eight postseason contests during his tenure with the club.

"Nothing is shocking at all," Lauther stated regarding his release. "I just got the call and it was what it was. The decision was made. And for me, there's no ill will or hard feelings or any animosity."

The kicker revealed he actually requested that the team delay announcing his release until after the Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic charity hockey game, which he helped organize and participated in during late February. The event, which Lauther started in 2023, raises thousands of dollars for the foundation that supports community initiatives across Saskatchewan.

Continuing Community Work During Transition

Despite his football career being in flux, Lauther has continued his work with the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation throughout the offseason. He has been regularly conducting mental wellness and literacy presentations in schools across the province, visiting educational institutions in areas like Swift Current in the weeks following his release.

"I think it's something that, since I'm still getting to do, it's awesome," Lauther explained. "It's so rewarding. I think it's one of the best things — if not the best thing besides winning for the club — that the team can do, getting out to so many different areas of the province."

The veteran athlete emphasized how much he values these community connections, noting that interacting with students and teachers across Saskatchewan has been among the most meaningful aspects of his time with the organization.

Reflecting on a Meaningful Chapter

Lauther, who signed a three-year contract extension with the Roughriders in 2024, acknowledged that his release provided an unexpected opportunity for reflection about his career and the relationships he built during his eight seasons with the team.

"I got a bit of time to reflect for the first time in my career about everything and all the good times," he shared. "So I just turned it into a positive as much as it was tricky at the start, just because, not only football-wise, just so many people I consider family, good friends, all the schools, so many things kind of given to us over the years here that you're going to miss and kind of have to quickly realize that aren't going to be there anymore."

The kicker expressed particular appreciation for how the Roughriders organization handled his release, specifically mentioning their willingness to delay the public announcement until after his charity hockey event.

Looking Ahead to Football Future

While Lauther continues his community work and reflects on his time with Saskatchewan, his primary focus remains on securing a position with another CFL team. His experience, consistency, and professional approach make him an attractive candidate for organizations seeking veteran special teams expertise.

The former Roughrider's determination to continue his kicking career demonstrates both his passion for the sport and his belief that he still has valuable contributions to make at the professional level. As free agency continues across the Canadian Football League, Lauther remains hopeful that another team will recognize his abilities and provide him with the opportunity to extend his professional football journey.
