Broadcasting Icon Bill Wilms Concludes 25-Year Tenure with Vancouver Giants
After a remarkable quarter-century behind the microphone, Bill Wilms, the Vancouver Giants' esteemed radio analyst, is set to call his final game on March 21, 2026. The 83-year-old Richmond native, who has been with the Western Hockey League (WHL) franchise since its inception, will retire following the team's regular season finale against the Kamloops Blazers at the Langley Events Centre, broadcast on Sportsnet 650 and Victory+.
A Legacy of Dedication and Insight
Wilms has been the voice of the Giants for all 25 seasons, missing only a handful of games throughout his tenure. His deep knowledge of the team and the league has made him a walking encyclopedia of Giants history, from early stars like Adam Courchaine and Gilbert Brule to Memorial Cup champions Milan Lucic and Evander Kane, and current prospects like Ryan Lin, a projected early pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
In recognition of his contributions, the WHL recently honored Wilms with the Bob Ridley Award for media excellence. The Giants paid tribute to him during a home game on March 14, 2026, where his family attended, and players wore T-shirts featuring his image. Reflecting on his career, Wilms expressed a sense of fulfillment, stating, "Twenty-five years—I don't know how come it feels perfect. There's a finality to 25. And it's celebratory. It all fits."
Top Memories from a Storied Career
Wilms shared his five favorite moments covering the Giants, highlighting pivotal playoff series that defined his broadcasting journey:
- 2005 First Round vs. Kelowna Rockets: During an NHL lockout season, the Giants, despite finishing 38 points behind Kelowna, pushed the series to six games, with all matches decided by a single goal and two going into overtime, drawing significant fan interest.
- 2007 Championship Series vs. Medicine Hat Tigers: In a thrilling WHL final, Medicine Hat clinched with a 3-2 double-overtime win in Game 7, part of a series where five games were decided by one goal. Wilms recalled over 406,000 viewers in Vancouver alone for the broadcast, showcasing its widespread appeal.
- 2019 Championship Series vs. Prince Albert Raiders: Another seven-game battle ended with Prince Albert winning 3-2 in overtime at home. Wilms vividly remembers Dante Hannoun's series-clinching goal and the passionate Giants fans who filled the venue to listen.
- 2022 First Round Playoffs vs. Everett Silvertips: In a major upset, the No. 8 seed Giants defeated the No. 1 seed Everett in six games, marking the first such victory under the WHL's current playoff format. Wilms described the electric atmosphere at the Langley Events Centre as deafening.
- 2009 Second Round Playoffs vs. Spokane Chiefs: This series featured three consecutive overtime games, including a quadruple-overtime marathon in Game 5 that lasted 126:05, the third-longest game in WHL history. Wilms and his broadcast partner received praise for their energetic coverage throughout.
A Career Rooted in Hockey Passion
Wilms' broadcasting career began in 1986 with the New Westminster Bruins, working alongside Dan Russell, which led to his role with the Giants. He also contributed to over 662 WHL games on Shaw TV. His ability to break down complex plays and explain junior hockey nuances, such as player development from ages 16 to 20, has been a hallmark of his work. "To see the change between a player that comes to camp at 16 and how he changes by the time he's 20 was so compelling," he noted.
As Wilms prepares for his final broadcast, he anticipates mixed emotions, saying, "It is going to feel weird walking out of that building Saturday for the last time as a broadcaster." However, he plans to return as a fan in the future, leaving behind a legacy that has enriched the WHL and Giants community for decades.
