NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has publicly backed the controversial ruling that allowed the Anaheim Ducks' overtime goal to stand in their Game 4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The goal, scored by center Ryan Poehling, gave the Ducks a crucial win in the first-round playoff series, but it was met with scrutiny over whether the play should have been reviewed further.
Bettman's Statement on the Goal
Bettman, speaking to reporters on Monday, emphasized that the on-ice officials made the correct call. 'The play was reviewed thoroughly, and the goal was deemed good according to the rules,' he said. 'I stand by the decision of the officials and the NHL's Situation Room.'
Controversy Around the Overtime Winner
The goal occurred just over five minutes into overtime, with Poehling tipping a shot from the point past Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. Edmonton challenged the goal, arguing that there was goaltender interference, but the call on the ice was upheld after video review. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch expressed frustration after the game, stating that he believed contact was made with Skinner before the puck crossed the line.
Despite the controversy, Bettman's support solidifies the league's stance. The Ducks now hold a 3-1 series lead, putting the Oilers on the brink of elimination. Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday in Edmonton.
