Alexandre Texier Joins Canadiens Seeking Fresh Start After Blues Exit
Alexandre Texier Joins Canadiens for Fresh Start

Forward Alexandre Texier is embracing a new chapter with the Montreal Canadiens, focusing squarely on the future after what appeared to be a difficult separation from the St. Louis Blues. The 26-year-old French native made his first practice appearance with the team in Brossard on Monday, just one day after signing a one-year contract worth US$1 million.

A Deliberate Shift in Focus

Texier was unequivocal about his intentions during his initial media availability. "What's in the past is in the past. I don't want to look back. I want to stay positive," he stated, choosing not to elaborate on the circumstances that led to his departure from St. Louis. His contract was terminated after he was assigned to the AHL's Springfield team and refused to report, leading to his placement on unconditional waivers last Friday.

This swift turn of events made him an unrestricted free agent, sparking interest from multiple NHL clubs. His agent, Dan Milstein, confirmed that nine teams reached out, with the Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, and Vancouver Canucks among those reportedly in the mix. However, for Texier, the choice was clear. "Montreal was my first option," he revealed. "They're a young team that plays fast. It was the excitement I got from this."

Where Texier Fits in the Canadiens' Lineup

The Canadiens are navigating a challenging season, particularly with a forward group depleted by injuries to key players like Kirby Dach, Alex Newhook, and Patrik Laine. Texier's arrival provides much-needed depth and versatility. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 196 pounds, he can play both centre and wing and has experience on special teams.

Head coach Martin St. Louis was cautious about setting an immediate timeline for Texier's debut. "He needs to get acclimated with the group. He needs to figure out how we play collectively," St. Louis explained. He did, however, express optimism about the player's potential, noting, "We like the potential of the player or else we wouldn't have signed him." During his first practice, Texier was slotted on a line with Zachary Bolduc and Cole Caufield, filling in for Nick Suzuki.

With 240 NHL games to his credit, Texier brings a career tally of 40 goals and 91 points. His familiarity with the league and existing relationships with teammates like Bolduc from St. Louis and Josh Anderson from their time with the Columbus Blue Jackets should aid his integration.

Looking Ahead to the Road Trip

The timing of his signing coincides with the Canadiens' upcoming three-game road trip, starting in Utah on Wednesday. Texier believes this is a positive development. "It's good that everything happened so quickly," he said. "I think it might be a good thing that I'm not in Montreal to start. It's way different. Just the media and everything. I've got to get used to that."

He enters the lineup as the team's only extra forward, especially after winger Joshua Roy was returned to the AHL's Laval Rocket following practice. While his role is likely to be in the bottom six forward group initially, Texier is ready for the opportunity. "No matter what, you've always got something to prove," he affirmed. "I'll have something to prove now, even if everything goes well. That's part of the NHL."

In a related roster move, defenceman Adam Engstrom, who was named AHL player of the week after a seven-point performance in three games, was promoted and will join the team on the road trip.
