Roughriders Beat Stampeders 40-37 in Double Overtime

The Saskatchewan Roughriders held on to defeat the Calgary Stampeders 40-37 in double overtime on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium, improving to 2-0 to start the CFL season. The Green and White nearly squandered a 16-point lead built in the first half, but a one-yard touchdown plunge by Tommy Stevens in the second overtime series secured the victory.

Harris Leads the Offense

Quarterback Trevor Harris threw for 349 yards and three touchdown passes, two of which went to receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker. The Roughriders' offense generated 31 points through three quarters, but a fumble by Harris and a missed field goal allowed the Stampeders to force overtime.

Harris connected with KeeSean Johnson for a 38-yard gain on the opening drive, setting up a field goal for an early 3-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, a 38-yard pass to Samuel Emilus set up a two-yard rushing touchdown by Stevens, making it 10-0.

Costly Mistakes Nearly Derail Saskatchewan

In the second quarter, Harris fumbled on his own 14-yard line, leading to a short touchdown run by Quincy Vaughn that cut the lead to 10-7. Saskatchewan responded immediately as Harris hit Schaffer-Baker over the middle for a 53-yard touchdown, restoring a 17-7 advantage.

Later in the quarter, Harris found Emilus for 27 yards and then connected with Schaffer-Baker on a four-yard touchdown pass, his second-career two-touchdown game, to make it 23-7 after a missed convert. On the ensuing kickoff, the Roughriders recovered the ball but attempted a 47-yard field goal into the wind. Alex Hale's kick was wide left, and Tyreik McAllister returned it the length of the field for a touchdown, trimming the lead to 23-14 at halftime.

Stampeders Rally in Second Half

Calgary added a field goal early in the third quarter to make it 23-17. Saskatchewan then marched down the field and converted a third-and-eight gamble as Harris found Emilus for the first down, followed by a four-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. A two-point convert by A.J. Ouellette extended the lead to 31-17.

Vernon Adams Jr., who managed just 20 passing yards in the first half, led a four-play, 64-yard touchdown drive featuring strikes of over 20 yards to Dejon Brissett and Erik Brooks. Vaughn scored from a yard out to make it 31-24, and the Stampeders eventually tied the game to force overtime.

Overtime Drama

The Roughriders failed to score in the fourth quarter, but Stevens' one-yard run in the second overtime period sealed the win. Saskatchewan improved to 2-0, while Calgary fell to 1-1.
