Roughriders 2026 Training Camp: Special Teams & Coaches Preview
Roughriders 2026 Training Camp: Special Teams & Coaches

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to begin their 2026 CFL campaign with training camp opening this week. Rookie camp starts Wednesday in Saskatoon, followed by main camp on Sunday. As the defending Grey Cup champions, the team enters with a mix of returning veterans and newcomers vying for roster spots.

Special Teams Overhaul

The special teams unit will look drastically different in 2026 after the departure of longtime kicker Brett Lauther and the retirement of long snapper Jorgen Hus. The kicking competition features Michael Hughes, Jonathan Kim, and Alex Hale. Hughes, 23, appeared in one game last season, converting both field goal attempts. Kim, 25, and Hale, 27, are also in the mix for the starting job.

At punter, Jesse Mirco returns after averaging 47.4 yards per punt last season. He faces competition from Oscar Chapman, who spent last year with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings after a college career at Auburn. Long snapper duties fall to Aaron Crawford, a 39-year-old veteran who spent the last five seasons with Calgary after seven years in Hamilton. He is joined by American Reed Hughes, who played six seasons at Auburn.

James Letcher, 26, is expected to take over as the primary returner after signing from Montreal, where he spent the last three seasons. He replaces Mario Alford as the team's kick and punt return specialist.

Coaching Staff Stability

Head coach Corey Mace enters his third season at the helm, having built a championship culture that led to a Grey Cup victory in 2025. Offensive coordinator Marc Mueller returns for his third season, continuing his partnership with quarterback Trevor Harris. The defensive side is led by coordinator Joshua Bell, while special teams coordinator Kent Maugeri oversees the revamped unit.

The full coaching staff includes offensive line coach Edwin Harrison, receivers coach Marquay McDaniel, running backs coach Andrew Harris, offensive assistant Josh Donnelly, linebackers coach Travis Brown, defensive line coach Micah Johnson, defensive backs coach Jordan Linnen, and special teams assistant Jeff Stusek.

With a mix of experienced leaders and fresh talent, the Roughriders aim to defend their title and build on their recent success. The competition in camp will determine the final roster as the team prepares for the season opener.
