Ottawa Rapid FC kicked off their Northern Super League campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Halifax Tides FC on Wednesday night at TD Place Stadium. The win marks a strong start for the expansion franchise in Canada's new professional women's soccer league.
First Half Dominance
The home side controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, pressing high and forcing Halifax into defensive errors. Ottawa's breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when striker Alex Morgan latched onto a through ball from midfielder Sarah Jackson and slotted it past Tides goalkeeper Emily Jones. The goal sent the announced crowd of 12,847 into a frenzy.
Halifax struggled to create chances in the first half, managing only one shot on target. Ottawa's defense, led by captain Kadeisha Buchanan, remained composed and organized throughout.
Second Half Sealer
Ottawa doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Jackson scored a stunning long-range effort that curled into the top corner. The goal effectively put the game out of reach for Halifax, who were unable to mount a comeback.
"I'm really proud of the team's performance tonight," said Ottawa head coach Bev Priestman. "We executed our game plan perfectly and showed the quality we have in this squad."
Halifax head coach Lewis Page acknowledged his team's shortcomings: "We were second best tonight. Ottawa was sharper and more clinical. We need to learn from this and come back stronger."
