Day 1 of Stampeders Main Camp: Grey Cup Feel to 2026 CFL Campaign

The Calgary Stampeders kicked off their main camp on Sunday with a palpable sense of optimism and a Grey Cup vibe, a departure from recent seasons. This year's camp carries extra significance as McMahon Stadium is set to host the 113th Grey Cup in November, and the team is coming off a strong 2025 campaign.

Grey Cup Atmosphere

Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson noted the excitement surrounding the team's mission to defend home turf. "Right now, everyone's talking about it," Dickenson said. "You can feel it a little bit. We can talk about the Grey Cup, but we need to handle today first. The competition is already heavy, and the rookies are good players."

Focus on Growth

With 51 of 99 campers returning from last season's 11-7 squad that made the playoffs, the team has fewer questions and roster spots to fill. Dickenson emphasized growth: "The big thing we're just trying to do is grow. Everyone should try to be better — coaches, players. Sometimes there are growing pains, but be open to new ideas. Even after a good year, you have to get better because someone is chasing your job."

The Stampeders' rookie camp, which featured 45 players, concluded with three cuts: American receiver Corey Dyches, American offensive lineman Gerald Mincey, and Canadian defensive lineman Jason Janvier-Messier. Main camp continues with the regular-season opener set for June 5 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium.
