The Canadian Football League (CFL) is bringing back the 20-second play clock for the last three minutes of each half, a rule change aimed at accelerating the pace of play during critical moments. The decision, announced on May 12, 2026, reverses a previous adjustment that had extended the clock to 30 seconds in those situations.
Reason for the Change
League officials stated that the shorter clock is intended to reduce stalling tactics and keep games moving during high-pressure periods. The rule applies to both the second and fourth quarters, ensuring that teams cannot deliberately slow down the game to protect a lead.
Impact on Gameplay
Coaches and players will need to adjust their strategies, particularly in close contests where time management is crucial. The change could lead to more frantic finishes, as offenses have less time to set up plays and defenses can anticipate quicker snaps.
The CFL previously used a 20-second clock in the final three minutes before switching to 30 seconds in 2022. The league’s competition committee recommended the reversion after analyzing game data and receiving feedback from fans who preferred faster-paced endings.
Reactions from the League
CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said the rule aligns with the league’s commitment to exciting, fan-friendly football. “We want every game to end with a sense of urgency, and this change ensures that,” he noted. The new clock will be in effect for the upcoming season, beginning with training camps this month.
