The Toronto Blue Jays put on an offensive clinic Saturday afternoon, dismantling the visiting Los Angeles Angels 14-1 at Rogers Centre. After a frustrating road trip where scoring was scarce, the bats came alive in a big way.
Offensive Explosion
The Jays racked up 20 hits, with Ernie Clement leading the charge with five. The game broke open in the fifth inning when Toronto scored seven runs, capitalizing on defensive miscues by the Angels. Rookie catcher Brandon Valenzuela capped the inning with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season.
Jesus Sanchez also went deep, hitting his fifth homer in the eighth inning to break a tie for second on the team in home runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has yet to hit his fourth.
Pitching Performance
Starter Trey Yesavage lasted four innings, throwing 87 pitches while allowing four hits and two walks, striking out six. He started strong, striking out the side in the first inning, but his dominance waned as the game progressed. The bullpen held the Angels to one run over five innings, with Tommy Nance closing out the ninth.
Barger Returns
Addison Barger was activated from the injured list and started in right field, showcasing his strong arm by throwing out a runner at the plate. He went 0-for-3 but drew two walks. Manager John Schneider acknowledged the tough decision to option Yohendrick Pinango to Triple-A Buffalo to make room.
Up Next
The Blue Jays go for their second series sweep of the season on Sunday, with left-hander Eric Lauer scheduled to start against the Angels.
