The Toronto Blue Jays have made significant roster moves on Monday, designating malcontent pitcher Eric Lauer for assignment and placing outfielder Addison Barger on the injured list.
Lauer's Fall from Grace
Eric Lauer, who was a key contributor to the Blue Jays' regular-season success last year, has been designated for assignment after a rough outing in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The left-hander has struggled throughout the 2026 season, posting a 1-5 record with a 6.69 ERA and allowing 11 home runs in eight starts.
Lauer's troubles began in the offseason when he took the team to salary arbitration, lost his case, and publicly expressed his displeasure during spring training. His performance suffered further after a bout with the flu, and tensions escalated when he voiced dissatisfaction with being used behind an opener. Manager John Schneider addressed the issue, telling Lauer to focus on his role as determined by the team.
Barger's Setback
Outfielder Addison Barger, who recently returned from an ankle injury, has been placed on the injured list with an elbow ailment. The injury likely stems from a spectacular 101.2 mph throw he made from the outfield on Saturday. Barger's return was expected to provide a power boost, but an MRI on Sunday revealed the need for further recovery.
Roster Replacements
To fill Lauer's spot, the Blue Jays recalled right-handed pitcher Yariel Rodriguez from Triple-A Buffalo. Outfielder Yohendrick Pinango takes Barger's place on the roster and was inserted into the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, batting second and playing left field.
These moves come as the Blue Jays, with an 18-22 record, look to stabilize their roster amid a volatile season. More updates are expected as the team continues to navigate its challenges.
