B.C. Lions Consider Four American Offensive Linemen for 2026 Season
B.C. Lions Eye Four American O-Linemen Strategy for 2026

The B.C. Lions are considering a significant shift in their offensive line configuration, potentially starting four American players up front to protect quarterback Nathan Rourke. General manager Ryan Rigmaiden confirmed the team is evaluating this approach during training camp in Kamloops.

Flexibility in Lineup Construction

Rigmaiden emphasized that the lineup remains fluid but noted that the four-American offensive line scheme is a viable option. 'We're going to look at everything. We're not married to any philosophy right now,' he said. The team is focused on putting the best 24 players on the field.

The current plan features Kory Woodruff and Brandon Yates on the left side, Chris Schleuger and Dejon Allen on the right, and Coquitlam product Michael Couture at centre. CFL teams must start eight Canadian nationals, and the Lions previously used two Canadians on the offensive line, typically Couture and Anu Una.

Inspired by Saskatchewan's Success

Rigmaiden pointed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who won the Grey Cup last season using four American offensive linemen. 'Saskatchewan won a Grey Cup doing it,' he said. 'We feel like we have some skill guys that can come in here and play right away, and that allows us to dress the extra American offensive lineman.'

The Lions led the league in fewest sacks allowed (20) and set a CFL record with 8.04 yards per play last season. However, changes became necessary after left tackle Jarell Broxton signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a free agent. Broxton, an All-CFL selection, turned down an offer that would have made him the highest-paid tackle in the league.

Adapting to Changes

In response, the Lions asked Woodruff to shift from guard to tackle. Woodruff, 26, has dropped 25 pounds to improve his quickness for handling speed rushers. 'The coaches really believed that Kory can be the guy,' Rigmaiden said. 'But it was on Kory to change his body and mindset.' Woodruff's career arc mirrors Broxton's, who also transitioned from guard to tackle.

If the Lions adopt the four-American scheme, they will need to find a spot for an additional Canadian player. Receiver is a potential area, especially after Ayden Eberhardt left for Ottawa as a free agent. Kieran Poissant, a third-year Lion from Regina, is in contention, along with draft picks Nate DeMontagnac (first round) and Nick Cenacle (fifth round).

Preseason Preview

The Lions will test their offensive line configuration in a preseason game on May 23 in Langford against the Edmonton Elks. Rigmaiden remains open to adjustments based on performance and injuries. 'We always want to have a flexible philosophy,' he said.
