Toronto Marlies Coach John Gruden Building Case for NHL Head Coach Job
Marlies Coach Gruden Eyes NHL Head Coach Role

As the Toronto Marlies prepare for the Calder Cup final, questions arise about head coach John Gruden's future. The team, under Gruden's leadership, has reached the American Hockey League championship series for the first time since 2018, sparking speculation about his candidacy for the Maple Leafs' head coaching vacancy.

Gruden Focused on the Present

When asked if he had discussed the Leafs' job with general manager John Chayka, Gruden replied, "No. He has done a really good job of letting us finish the year and leaving us alone. He has a job to do, but he's allowing us to do ours, which is nice." Gruden remains focused on the Marlies' playoff run, which has seen them defeat Rochester, Laval, Cleveland, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

A Strong Case for Promotion

Gruden's credentials include an Ontario Hockey League championship with Hamilton in 2018 and five seasons as an NHL assistant coach with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. He left the Bruins in 2023 to gain head coaching experience in the AHL. "I love to coach, I love to teach," Gruden said. "I want to be a coach at the highest level, but right now I'm focusing on the Marlies."

Player and Management Support

Captain Logan Shaw praised Gruden's approach: "He's a player's coach, he loves giving the dressing room to the older guys, and then coming in when he has to. He holds guys accountable to the right extent." Marlies general manager Ryan Hardy noted Gruden's ability to balance coaching and development: "It's a hard league to coach in because you're always serving two masters. There has been a lot of decisions he has made in-game or situations that have proven to be correct."

Key contributors to the Marlies' success include goaltender Artur Akhytamov, veterans Logan Shaw, Vinni Lettieri, and William Villeneuve, as well as prospects Easton Cowan, Ben Danford, Luke Haymes, and Ryan Tverberg. The team faces the Chicago Wolves in a best-of-seven series starting Friday.
