Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka stated on Tuesday that the team's search for a new head coach is in its final stages, with an announcement expected within the next several days.
Chayka Provides Update on Coaching Hire
Speaking during a media availability following the trade of goaltender Joseph Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers, Chayka said, "I think we're on the final phases at this stage. It's been a pretty thorough process so far, and we've taken our time with it. We've had some in-person meetings recently and we're getting down to decision time. Should be in the next several days."
Potential Candidates
Recent speculation has linked several names to the Leafs' coaching vacancy, including Patrick Roy, Jay Woodcroft, Dallas Eakins, and Joe Pavelski. Among them, Pavelski has confirmed discussions with the team. Peter Laviolette was also reportedly considered but was hired by the Los Angeles Kings last week. Chayka may also explore the availability of Bruce Cassidy, who was fired by the Vegas Golden Knights in late March but was not permitted to speak with the Edmonton Oilers. The Golden Knights announced on Tuesday that John Tortorella would not return after their Stanley Cup final loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, though the Leafs are not expected to pursue him.
Timeline and Process
Wednesday marks five weeks since Craig Berube was fired on May 13. At the NHL scouting combine on June 5, Chayka revealed that an initial group of 55 candidates had been narrowed to 20, and then further reduced. The Leafs are now in the final phase of interviews and deliberations.
