Yasiel Puig faces 18-month prison sentence after Leafs signing

Yasiel Puig, the former Los Angeles Dodgers star who recently signed a record-breaking deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball club, is facing the possibility of an 18-month prison sentence. According to a report by the California Post, Puig was found guilty in U.S. federal court earlier this year on charges of obstruction of justice and lying to federal officials in connection with an illegal gambling operation.

Sentencing Request

A sentencing memorandum filed in a California court and obtained by the outlet reveals that U.S. authorities are requesting an 18-month prison sentence, along with three years of probation and a US$55,000 fine. The memo argues that the sentence is appropriate because it reflects the severity of Puig's crimes and his lack of remorse, and it serves to punish him and deter others from committing similar offenses. Prosecutors also noted that Puig's personal history and characteristics were considered in the recommendation.

Defense Arguments

Puig's lawyer, Keri Curtis Axel, has argued that the former baseball star should avoid prison altogether. Axel told The Athletic that Puig is a first-time offender who has already suffered significant consequences, including years of prosecution, reputational damage, financial losses, and the effective end of his professional career. Axel stated, "A prison sentence is not proportional to the conduct and would not accomplish any rehabilitative purpose here. The Court has complete discretion over the sentence and the defence will request a sentence of probation." Puig's sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 26.

Team's Stance

When the Maple Leafs signed Puig, CEO Keith Stein emphasized that the team had conducted extensive due diligence. Stein said, "We carried out extensive diligence (before signing Puig). We've had discussions with lots of different people. The issues have been dealt with by the justice system, by other, more qualified parties." He added that the team is focused on fielding the best talent and believes Puig is on the right track in his personal life, deserving a chance to play professional baseball.

On-Field Performance

Despite his legal troubles, Puig has made a strong impression on the field. In his debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Christie Pits park, he hit two home runs against the Kitchener Panthers. After walking in his first plate appearance, Puig hit a solo home run to left field in his second at-bat, giving the Leafs a 4-1 lead. In the fifth inning, he repeated the feat with another solo homer to left. Puig finished the game 2-for-2 with two home runs, four RBIs, and two walks, helping the Leafs secure an 8-6 victory.
