Varland Named AL Reliever of the Month, Jays' Closer

After Jeff Hoffman's demotion from the highest-leverage bullpen role, the Toronto Blue Jays may prefer to describe their bullpen situation as a closer-by-committee setup. However, actions so far suggest otherwise: it appears to be a committee of one, ruled by Louis Varland.

Varland Earns AL Reliever of the Month

The hard-throwing right-hander was recognized on Monday when MLB named him the American League Reliever of the Month. Since unofficially taking over from Hoffman last month, Varland's status has been cemented by his outstanding results.

The 28-year-old posted a minuscule 0.56 ERA in April, allowing just one earned run over 16 innings pitched. During that stretch, he converted all four of his save opportunities, three of which came after Hoffman's demotion. Varland's 43.4% strikeout percentage ranked second in the majors, trailing only San Diego Padres' Mason Miller, who was named NL Reliever of the Month.

Is Varland Really the Closer?

By all accounts, yes, even if the Blue Jays are hesitant to bestow the title officially. Manager John Schneider has been reluctant to officially designate Varland as closer, perhaps to ease the transition away from Hoffman. This showed respect for Hoffman, who signed a three-year, $33-million US deal prior to the 2025 season with the expectation of being the closer.

When Hoffman struggled early this season, Schneider stuck with him as long as possible before being forced to make the change. While others may occasionally get the closing assignment, the Jays will primarily use Varland at the most critical points in games, whether in the eighth or ninth inning. Such occasions will be rare.

What Makes Varland Perfect for the Job?

The statistics tell a significant part of the story. Acing his first four save opportunities is impressive, but it is only part of Varland's appeal. Schneider has frequently praised the fire Varland brings to the mound and his aggressive approach against hitters.

Varland's lethal fastball, routinely clocked at 99 mph or higher, and his confident demeanor in game-saving situations make him an ideal closer. His performance in April has solidified his role, and the Blue Jays are reaping the benefits of his dominance.
