Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki has been nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded annually to the National Hockey League's best defensive forward. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
Suzuki, 26, is joined by Tampa Bay Lightning center Anthony Cirelli and New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson as the three finalists for the award. The winner will be announced during the NHL Awards ceremony later this month.
This marks the first Selke nomination for Suzuki, who has established himself as one of the league's premier two-way forwards. In the 2025-26 regular season, he recorded 28 goals and 47 assists for 75 points in 82 games, while posting a plus-16 rating. His defensive metrics were among the best in the league, ranking in the top 10 among forwards in takeaways and shorthanded ice time.
"Nick has grown into an elite player at both ends of the ice," said Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis. "His work ethic, hockey IQ, and commitment to defense make him a deserving candidate for this honor."
Cirelli, 28, is a two-time Selke finalist and won the award in 2024. He tallied 20 goals and 35 assists in 78 games this season, while leading all Lightning forwards in blocked shots and penalty-kill time.
Nelson, 34, is a first-time finalist after a career year defensively. The veteran center scored 34 goals and added 30 assists, while excelling in faceoffs and defensive zone coverage for the Islanders.
The Selke Trophy is voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season. Suzuki is the first Canadiens player to be a finalist for the award since Tomas Plekanec in 2015.
"It's a huge honor to be recognized among these guys," Suzuki said. "I take a lot of pride in my defensive game, and this nomination reflects the hard work our whole team puts in."
