The Saskatchewan Roughriders suffered their first loss of the 2026 CFL season on Friday night, falling 40-34 to the Toronto Argonauts in front of 25,035 fans at Mosaic Stadium. After opening the season with two wins, the Roughriders now stand at 2-1, while the Argonauts improved to 2-1.
Argonauts Strike First with Big Plays
Toronto wasted no time establishing dominance. On the first offensive play of the game, running back Sam Hicks rumbled 61 yards into scoring range. However, two plays later, Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly was intercepted by Roughriders linebacker Josh Woods at the goal line. Saskatchewan's drive stalled, and a punt by the Roughriders proved costly as Toronto's Janarion Grant returned it 68 yards for a touchdown.
A Toronto field goal extended the lead to 10-0. Saskatchewan appeared poised to respond after a successful third-and-four gamble, but quarterback Trevor Harris was intercepted in the end zone by Argonauts defensive back Tarvarus McFadden. That turnover led to another Argos field goal, making it 13-0.
Roughriders Rally to Take Lead
On Saskatchewan's fourth drive, rookie running back Quali Conley picked up a first down on an 18-yard carry, and Harris connected with Samuel Emilus for a 31-yard gain. A few plays later, Harris found KeeSean Johnson on a four-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 13-7.
Saskatchewan added a 36-yard field goal by Alex Hale to make it 13-10. On their next drive, Conley broke free for a 17-yard touchdown run, capping a five-play, 59-yard drive that gave the Roughriders a 17-13 lead.
Toronto Answers Before Halftime
The Argonauts responded before halftime. Kelly hit Damonte Coxie for a 37-yard gain and then found Tyler Kahmann on a 27-yard touchdown strike, giving Toronto a 20-17 lead at the break.
Lirim Hajrullahu added a 47-yard field goal on the first drive of the second half. Toronto then found the end zone on their next series as Kelly scored on a two-yard run to make it 30-17.
Saskatchewan Fights Back but Falls Short
The Roughriders answered as Harris hit rookie Daniel Wiebe for a 31-yard gain, followed by a pair of first-down throws to Johnson. Harris then connected with Schaffer-Baker, who spun toward the end zone, before short-yardage specialist Tommy Stevens punched in a one-yard touchdown to make it 30-24 with one minute left in the third quarter.
Another Argonauts field goal early in the fourth quarter made it 33-24. Saskatchewan cut the lead again as Wiebe caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Harris, capping a six-play, 65-yard drive to make it 33-31 with 9:36 remaining.
According to the article by Taylor Shire, the Argonauts added a final field goal to seal the 40-34 victory. The Roughriders will look to rebound in Week 5.
