Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic defeated Coco Gauff of the United States in a dramatic semifinal at Wimbledon on Thursday, winning 7-6 (6), 6-3 to advance to the championship match.
Tie-break drama decides first set
The first set was a tightly contested affair, with both players holding serve until the tie-break. Muchova saved two set points and clinched the set after a tense rally, taking it 8-6 in the tie-break. Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, struggled with unforced errors at crucial moments.
According to match statistics, Muchova won 78% of her first-serve points and hit 25 winners compared to Gauff's 18. The Czech player's net play was particularly effective, winning 12 of 16 approaches.
Muchova dominates second set
In the second set, Muchova broke Gauff's serve early and maintained the advantage, closing out the match on her first match point with a forehand winner down the line. The victory sends Muchova to her first Wimbledon final, where she will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Elena Rybakina.
“I'm incredibly happy. Coco is a great player and I knew I had to play my best tennis to win,” Muchova said in her on-court interview. “The tie-break was so intense, but I stayed focused and believed in my game.”
Gauff reflects on loss
Gauff, who was seeking her first Wimbledon final appearance, acknowledged Muchova's strong performance. “She played really well today. I had my chances but couldn't take them. I'll learn from this and come back stronger,” Gauff said.
Muchova's victory marks the first time a Czech woman has reached the Wimbledon final since Petra Kvitova won the title in 2014. The 29-year-old Muchova is ranked No. 12 in the world and has now defeated three top-10 players en route to the final.
