The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jamahl Mosley after five seasons, during which the team made three first-round playoff appearances, the franchise announced Monday.
Mosley's tenure with the Magic
Mosley, who took over as head coach in 2021, compiled a record of 175-235 over five seasons. Despite a slow start, he led the Magic to playoff berths in three consecutive seasons, though the team failed to advance past the first round in each appearance. The Magic were eliminated by the Detroit Pistons in five games in the 2026 playoffs, which ultimately sealed Mosley's fate.
Team statement
“We want to thank Jamahl for his dedication and hard work over the past five years,” said Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman in a statement. “These decisions are never easy, but we believe a change in leadership is necessary to take the next step in our team’s development.”
What's next for Orlando
The Magic will immediately begin a search for a new head coach. The team has a young core, including Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, and is expected to be an attractive destination for coaching candidates. Potential names have already surfaced, including former NBA head coaches and top assistant coaches from around the league.
Mosley, 46, is expected to be a candidate for other head coaching vacancies around the NBA, given his reputation for player development and defensive acumen.
