The Calgary Flames selected Joe Iginla in the third round of the NHL draft Saturday morning, bringing a familiar surname into the organization. Iginla, the son of Flames legend Jarome Iginla, was taken with the 80th overall pick.
A Legacy Pick for the Flames
Joe Iginla, an 18-year-old forward, has been on the radar of scouts for his offensive instincts and hockey IQ. He played last season for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, recording 22 goals and 35 assists in 68 games. His selection by the Flames reunites the Iginla name with the franchise where his father spent 16 seasons, winning two Olympic gold medals and a Stanley Cup.
"It's a dream come true to be drafted by the same team my dad played for," Iginla said in an interview. "I grew up watching the Flames and wearing the jersey, and now I get a chance to earn my own spot."
Draft Day Details
The Flames entered the draft with several picks and used their first-round selection on defenceman Carson Carels. Carels, a mobile blue-liner from the Edmonton Oil Kings, was taken 18th overall. The team also had additional picks in later rounds, focusing on adding depth to their prospect pipeline.
General Manager Craig Conroy expressed satisfaction with the draft results. "We targeted players who fit our system and have high upside. Joe is a skilled forward with great bloodlines, and Carson brings size and mobility to our defence," Conroy said.
Other Notable Draft Moves
The Ottawa Senators selected two forwards in the first round, while the Toronto Maple Leafs traded defenceman Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues for a pair of third-round picks. The draft continued through the weekend, with teams making selections across seven rounds.
Joe Iginla's selection marks a sentimental moment for Flames fans, who fondly remember Jarome Iginla's tenure as captain and franchise leader in goals and points. The younger Iginla now begins his journey to the NHL, hoping to carve out his own legacy in Calgary.
