Canada's star player Alphonso Davies is ready to take the field in the FIFA World Cup knockout match against South Africa, the team's coach confirmed on Friday. The announcement comes as a relief to fans and teammates, as Davies had been nursing a minor injury during training sessions earlier this week.
Davies' Fitness Confirmed
Coach John Herdman stated that Davies has fully recovered and will be available for selection. “Alphonso is in top shape and eager to play. He’s been working hard in training, and we’re confident he’ll make an impact,” Herdman said during a press conference in Vancouver. Davies, who plays as a left-back for Bayern Munich, is considered one of Canada's most dynamic players.
Historic Knockout Match
This match marks Canada's first appearance in the knockout stage of a men's World Cup since 1986. The team advanced from Group H after a 2-1 win over Morocco and a 1-1 draw with Croatia. A victory against South Africa would propel Canada into the quarterfinals for the first time in history.
South Africa, ranked 66th in the world, has also exceeded expectations, reaching the round of 16 after defeating Senegal and drawing with Ecuador. The match is scheduled for Sunday at BC Place in Vancouver, with kickoff at 3:00 PM local time.
Team Morale High
“The whole squad is buzzing,” said midfielder Stephen Eustáquio. “We know what’s at stake, but we’re focused and ready to give everything.” Canada has not lost to South Africa in their last three meetings, including a 2-0 friendly win in 2023. However, South Africa’s defense has been solid, conceding only two goals in the group stage.
Herdman emphasized the importance of discipline: “We can’t afford any mistakes. South Africa is a tough opponent, but we have the quality to win.”
Injury Concerns
Davies had been listed as questionable after missing a training session on Thursday due to a knock on his ankle. However, he participated fully in Friday's practice, showing no signs of discomfort. “He’s a warrior,” said defender Kamal Miller. “He’ll be out there giving 100 percent.”
Canada will also rely on striker Jonathan David, who scored twice in the group stage, and goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who made crucial saves against Croatia. The team is expected to start with a 4-3-3 formation, with Davies on the left wing.
Fan Support
Over 50,000 fans are expected to fill BC Place, with many wearing red and white. “This is a dream come true for Canadian soccer,” said fan Sarah Thompson. “We believe in this team.” The match will be broadcast live on CBC and streaming platforms.
Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM PT on Sunday. The winner will face either Brazil or Portugal in the quarterfinals.
