Canadiens' Stars Seek Redemption in Game 2
BUFFALO — Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield and defenseman Lane Hutson are determined to bounce back after a disappointing Game 1 performance against the Buffalo Sabres in their Eastern Conference second-round series. Caufield, who scored 51 goals during the regular season, has managed only one goal in eight playoff games. Hutson, meanwhile, acknowledged his slow start in the series opener, where a tripping penalty and a costly fall led to an early Sabres goal.
Caufield's Scoring Drought
Caufield, 25, has registered just 14 shots on goal in the postseason, a stark contrast to his regular-season average of over three shots per game. Despite the slump, he remains confident. "I want to be better, I want to produce more, but you can't lack confidence in this league," Caufield said. "The confidence is there. There's no worries here." Head coach Martin St. Louis echoed that sentiment, stating, "Just keep putting him out there. Players are competitors. They're hungry, they want more."
Hutson's Self-Criticism
Hutson was hard on himself after Game 1, saying, "I feel like everyone kind of came ready to play, except me, honestly." He added, "It's a bad feeling, for sure, but we'll move on." St. Louis praised Hutson's work ethic, noting that he was the first player on the ice for practice the next day. "I let Lane be Lane," St. Louis said. "It's rare that he's not ready to play."
Adjustments for Game 2
The Canadiens expect more open space against the Sabres than they faced against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. St. Louis emphasized the need to push the pace and capitalize on scoring chances. "We know we can play with them," he said. "We're just going to have to do some things a bit better." Game 2 is set for Friday, with the Canadiens looking to even the series.
