The Vancouver Canucks selected center Caleb Malhotra with the third overall pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, held Monday night in Montreal. The 18-year-old forward from Brampton, Ontario, spent the 2025-26 season with the Brantford Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he recorded 34 goals and 62 assists for 96 points in 68 games.
Scouting Report and Potential
Malhotra is widely regarded as one of the top playmaking centers in the draft class, known for his exceptional vision, puck-handling skills, and hockey IQ. At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, he combines size with agility, making him a formidable two-way presence. Central Scouting ranked him second among North American skaters heading into the draft.
According to Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin, Malhotra was the player the organization had targeted for months. “Caleb is a dynamic offensive talent who can drive play and make his linemates better. We believe he has the potential to become a top-line center in the NHL,” Allvin said in a statement.
Canucks Draft Strategy
The Canucks entered the draft with the third overall pick after finishing 28th in the NHL standings last season. The team has been in a rebuilding phase, focusing on stocking its prospect pool with high-end talent. Malhotra joins a young core that includes forwards Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, though the team still lacks depth down the middle.
Vancouver also held picks in the second and third rounds, selecting defenseman Ethan Samson with the 35th overall pick and goaltender Carter George with the 67th overall pick.
Reaction from Malhotra
Malhotra expressed excitement about joining the Canucks organization. “It’s a dream come true to be drafted by Vancouver. I grew up watching the Sedins and the passion of the fans here. I’m ready to work hard and earn a spot on the team,” he said in a post-draft interview.
The draft marks the first time since 2019 that the Canucks have held a top-five pick, when they selected Vasily Podkolzin 10th overall. Malhotra is expected to attend Vancouver’s development camp in July and could challenge for a roster spot in training camp this fall.
