The Vancouver Canucks selected forward Caleb Malhotra with the third overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, held in Montreal on June 26. The 18-year-old center, who played for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, was widely projected as a top-five pick after a standout season. Malhotra recorded 32 goals and 48 assists for 80 points in 68 regular-season games, adding 12 points in 10 playoff contests. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin described Malhotra as a "complete two-way player with elite hockey sense and a relentless work ethic."
OHL Prospects Highlight Draft Night
Malhotra was one of several OHL players selected early in the draft, reflecting the league's strong talent pool. Guelph Storm defenseman Owen Parsons went seventh overall to the Seattle Kraken, while Brantford Bulldogs winger Liam Greer was picked 14th by the Nashville Predators. The draft's first overall selection was forward Ethan Belchetz of the Windsor Spitfires, taken by the Chicago Blackhawks. Malhotra's selection marks the first time a Kitchener Rangers player has been chosen in the top three since 2016, when Logan Brown went 11th overall.
Malhotra's Rise to the NHL
Hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, Malhotra joined the Rangers as a 16-year-old in 2024 and quickly established himself as a dynamic offensive threat. His 80 points ranked fifth in the OHL this season, and he was named to the league's Second All-Star Team. Scouts praise his vision, passing ability, and defensive responsibility, projecting him as a future top-six NHL center. "Caleb has the maturity and skill set to contribute at the NHL level sooner rather than later," said TSN draft analyst Craig Button. "His hockey IQ separates him from most players his age."
Canucks Bolster Prospect Pool
The Canucks entered the draft with a need for high-end forward prospects, and Malhotra is expected to become a cornerstone of their rebuild. Vancouver also held the 35th overall pick in the second round, which they used to select Swedish defenseman Erik Karlsson (no relation to the San Jose Sharks star). The team's scouting staff emphasized skill and character in their selections, according to director of amateur scouting Todd Harvey. "We targeted players who not only have talent but also the drive to improve every day," Harvey said. "Caleb fits that mold perfectly."
Draft Day Reactions
Malhotra expressed excitement after being drafted, thanking the Rangers organization and his family. "It's a dream come true to hear my name called by Vancouver," he said in a media availability. "I can't wait to get started and prove myself at the next level." The Canucks are expected to sign Malhotra to an entry-level contract in the coming weeks, with plans to have him attend training camp in September. He may return to the OHL for further development or join the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks, depending on his performance.
