The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled outfielder Jonatan Clase from the minor leagues after placing veteran designated hitter George Springer on the paternity list, the team announced Wednesday.
Springer steps away for family reasons
Springer, 36, was placed on the paternity list effective July 1, 2026, allowing him to be away from the team to be with his family for the birth of a child. The move is standard under MLB's collective bargaining agreement, which permits players to take up to three days on the paternity list.
Springer is hitting .261 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs this season. He has been a key contributor for the Blue Jays since signing a six-year, $150 million contract in 2021.
Clase gets another opportunity
Jonatan Clase, 24, was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Springer's spot on the active roster. The switch-hitting outfielder has appeared in 22 games for the Blue Jays this season, batting .198 with three home runs and eight stolen bases.
Clase was originally signed by the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent in 2018 and was acquired by Toronto in a trade during the 2025 offseason. He is known for his speed and defensive versatility in the outfield.
"He gives us a dynamic element off the bench," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "His speed can change a game, and we're excited to see him contribute."
Roster moves and implications
The Blue Jays also optioned pitcher Zach Pop to Triple-A to make room for Clase on the 40-man roster. The team currently sits third in the American League East with a 47-36 record, 4.5 games behind the first-place New York Yankees.
Springer is expected to rejoin the team for their weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
