George Springer Returns as Blue Jays DFA Eloy Jimenez Ahead of Red Sox Finale
George Springer Returns, Blue Jays DFA Jimenez

Toronto Blue Jays playoff hero George Springer returned to the active roster on Wednesday afternoon, just over two weeks after suffering a broken toe. The star outfielder and designated hitter was activated ahead of the series finale against the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre, but he was not in the starting lineup for the 3:07 p.m. game. According to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae, Springer is available to come off the bench if needed.

Springer's Injury and Recovery

Springer had been sidelined since April 11 after breaking his big toe during a game against the Minnesota Twins. On Tuesday, he tested the toe by hitting and running for a second consecutive day, apparently receiving a passing grade from the team's medical staff. The team announced his activation a couple of hours before the matinee start.

Roster Move: Jimenez Designated for Assignment

To make room for Springer, the Blue Jays designated designated hitter Eloy Jimenez for assignment. Jimenez, a former Silver Slugger award winner, posted a .290 batting average in 12 games with the Blue Jays and recorded three RBIs. His departure opens up a spot for Springer's return.

Springer's Performance Before Injury

One of the Blue Jays' key contributors during last year's playoff run, Springer had a slow start to the 2026 MLB season before landing on the injured list. He was slashing .185/.290/.370 with two home runs and four doubles in 14 games, well below his Silver Slugger award-winning numbers from the previous season.

Other Injury Returns

Springer is the second high-profile Blue Jays player to return from the injured list in as many days. On Tuesday night, rookie phenom Trey Yesavage made his season debut after dealing with a shoulder injury since spring training. Yesavage pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and no runs to earn the win.

Upcoming Schedule

After concluding their series with the Red Sox, the Blue Jays will hit the road for a four-game set against the Twins in Minnesota. They will then travel to Florida for three games against AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays before returning to Toronto for a series against the Los Angeles Angels.
