The Florida Panthers selected Penetanguishene prospect Ryder Cali with the 48th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, the team announced Saturday.
From Penetanguishene to the NHL Stage
Cali, an 18-year-old forward with the Ontario Hockey League's North Bay Battalion, was chosen in the second round. The pick was originally held by the Panthers and used to secure the skilled centre, who impressed scouts with his offensive instincts and two-way play.
"It's a dream come true," Cali said in a press conference. "I'm grateful to the Panthers for believing in me and excited to start this journey."
A Rising Star in the OHL
Cali recorded 68 points in 62 games for North Bay last season, leading the Battalion in scoring. His performance earned him a spot on the OHL's Second All-Star Team and attention from NHL scouts across the league.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound centre is known for his quick release and playmaking ability. Battalion coach Ryan Oulahen praised Cali's work ethic: "He's a player who makes everyone around him better."
Panthers' Draft Strategy
Florida entered the draft with the 48th overall pick after trading down from the 39th spot earlier in the day. The Panthers also selected defenseman Lucas Eriksson with the 80th overall pick.
Panthers general manager Bill Zito highlighted Cali's potential: "We saw a guy with high hockey IQ and a competitive edge. He fits our system perfectly."
Local Pride and Future Prospects
Cali, who grew up in Penetanguishene, Ontario, becomes the first player from the town to be drafted since 2014. His selection was met with excitement in the community, where he played minor hockey before joining the Battalion in 2023.
He is expected to attend Florida's development camp in July and could return to North Bay for another season before turning professional.
