William Eklund was enjoying a Pitbull concert when his phone rang with news that would change his career. The San Jose Sharks forward learned he had been traded to the Ottawa Senators in a deal that surprised him.
Shocking Trade Call
Eklund said he was at the concert when he received the call from Sharks general manager Mike Grier. “I was at a Pitbull concert with some friends, and I saw my phone ringing. It was Mike Grier. I stepped out to take the call, and he told me I had been traded to Ottawa. I was shocked,” Eklund recalled. The 23-year-old Swedish forward had spent his entire NHL career with the Sharks since being drafted seventh overall in 2021.
Eklund's Reaction and Readiness
Despite the surprise, Eklund expressed excitement about joining the Senators. “Ottawa is a great organization with a bright future. I’m ready to contribute and help the team win,” he said. The trade was part of a multi-player deal that sent Eklund and a draft pick to Ottawa in exchange for forward Josh Norris and a prospect.
Impact on Senators
The Senators view Eklund as a key addition to their top six forwards. In the 2025-26 season, Eklund recorded 18 goals and 35 assists in 72 games for the Sharks. His playmaking ability and speed are expected to bolster Ottawa's offense. Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said, “William is a dynamic player who will fit well with our core. We’re thrilled to have him.”
Eklund's Future in Ottawa
Eklund is under contract for two more seasons with a cap hit of $3.5 million. He is expected to join the Senators for training camp and compete for a spot on the top line alongside Tim Stützle and Brady Tkachuk. “I’ve heard great things about the city and the fans. I can’t wait to get started,” Eklund added.
