The Calgary Surge have parted ways with head coach Perry Huang after a winless start to the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season. The team announced Monday that Huang has been relieved of his coaching duties following a seventh consecutive loss.
The Surge fell 96-80 to the host Scarborough Shooting Stars on Saturday, dropping to an 0-7 record. It was the team's worst start in franchise history.
In a statement, the organization thanked Huang for his leadership and contributions, wishing him and his family the best moving forward. Surge president Dylan Howe emphasized the team's commitment to competing at the highest level and returning to winning ways.
Huang, who also serves as an assistant coach with the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League, was in his first season as a professional head coach. The Surge have not yet named an interim or permanent replacement.
Calgary's next game is Wednesday night at WinSport Event Centre against the Saskatoon Mamba, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. MT. The contest will be streamed nationally on CBC Gem, CBC Sports YouTube, and CEBL YouTube.
The Surge, who joined the CEBL in 2023, have struggled to find consistency this season. Huang's firing marks the first coaching change of the 2026 campaign.
