Brick Hockey Tournament Drops Puck at West Edmonton Mall

The 2026 Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament officially launched Friday with a jersey presentation for Team Alberta, setting the stage for Canada's most prestigious under-10 minor hockey event. The tournament runs from June 28 to July 5 at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace.

Tournament Legacy and NHL Alumni

Many current NHL players have participated in the Brick Tournament over the years, including Edmonton Oilers forwards Matt Savoie and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The event has long served as a showcase for young talent, with numerous alumni now playing in the Western Hockey League and beyond.

Team Alberta is an invitation-only squad assembled annually for the Brick tournament. Notable alumni include Vancouver Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes and Landon DuPont, projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NHL draft.

Words of Wisdom from Hockey Legends

Former Boston Bruins defenceman and 2011 Stanley Cup champion Johnny Boychuk shared advice with young players, emphasizing the importance of team bonds. "Being a part of a Stanley Cup team, we were all together. We picked each other up when things don't go your way," Boychuk said. "You guys are going to do great, but most of all, just have fun."

Craig MacTavish, former Edmonton Oilers player and head coach, addressed the players about their parents' sacrifices. "I commend all the parents here for the time that you've spent with your sons to get them to this level, and the impact you have on your sons is so critical to their success along the way," MacTavish said.

Fundamentals and Teamwork

MacTavish stressed the importance of fundamentals in an era of high-end individual skill. "Don't be afraid to spend some of the time and the quality time that you have on the ice on the fundamentals of the game," he advised.

Tournament chairman Craig Styles praised the dedication of parents and coaching staff. "It's great to see these kids reach this level and get the opportunity to do what was originally thought of when this tournament started—to play against kids at a very high level," Styles said.

Tournament Details

The Brick Invitational features teams from across North America, including NHL-affiliated squads like the Detroit Junior Red Wings, who won the tournament in 2024. All games are played at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace.

Players representing Team Alberta hail from communities such as Taber and St. Albert. The tournament provides a platform for young athletes to compete at an elite level while building lifelong memories and skills.
