Shots Fired in Surrey City Centre; Man Dies in VPD Jail

Shots were fired at a parked car in Surrey City Centre early Tuesday morning, but police do not believe the incident is linked to the ongoing extortions in the region.

Surrey Police Service officers responded to reports of gunfire near Central Avenue and 133rd Street just after 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an unoccupied vehicle with gunshot damage.

“The investigation is in its early stages and the motive for the shots fired is unknown, but it is believed to be targeted and not extortion-related,” said Sgt. Ali Gailus in a news release.

Death in VPD Jail Cells Under Investigation

The Vancouver Police Department has called in independent investigators after a man was found unconscious in police cells on Monday.

At approximately 8 a.m. on June 15, staff at the VPD jail discovered a prisoner unconscious and immediately contacted B.C. Emergency Health Services. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which probes serious injuries and deaths involving police, has been notified and will take over the case. The chief civilian director will determine the facts and whether any police actions or inaction contributed to the death.
