A 29-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with nearly 120 criminal counts in connection with a series of alleged property crimes across the city between March and May of this year. Police announced the charges on Tuesday, May 26, stating that the arrest has resolved more than 40 investigations spanning the city.
Details of the charges
The Ottawa Police Service media release indicated that the man, whose identity has not been disclosed, faces multiple charges including theft under $5,000, break and enter, fraudulent use of a credit card, mischief under $5,000, possession of break-in instruments, resisting arrest, and breach of a probation order.
Nature of the offenses
According to police, the investigation involved incidents of shoplifting, break and enter, fraud, and probation-related offenses. Investigators allege that the accused was involved in repeated thefts targeting retail stores, as well as break-ins into residential and commercial parking garages, where property and bank cards were stolen.
In total, the arrest helped resolve 40 investigations across Ottawa, police said. The cumulative financial impact of the offenses is believed to exceed $100,000, according to investigators.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by Ottawa police to address property crime in the city. The accused remains in custody pending a court appearance.
