Barrhaven Crossing Guard Peter Clark Remembered at Emotional Vigil
Barrhaven Crossing Guard Peter Clark Remembered at Vigil

Even dark-tinted glasses could not hide the tears in Katherine Kennedy-Boisvert's eyes as she looked up at the blazing sun during Peter Clark's vigil. She was among dozens who gathered at Weybridge Park in Barrhaven on a warm, windy Sunday afternoon to remember the crossing guard killed in a hit-and-run on March 23.

Before any words were spoken, the silent crowd of mourners testified to Clark's character. A young boy, holding his mother's hand, placed a bouquet of tulips among teddy bears. Photos of Clark, known as "The Smiling Crossing Guard," showed him with his wife Amanda, surrounded by handwritten notes, flowers, and stuffed animals.

The wind rustled the petals of yellow and orange tulips, matching Clark's crossing guard uniform. Soft classical music played, briefly easing the heavy atmosphere.

A Community's Tribute

Amanda Clark addressed the crowd, thanking them for their support over the past 41 days. "Your kind and generous words and actions have helped me get through some of the worst moments," she said, pausing to compose herself.

She read a letter Peter wrote to the Ottawa Safety Council on Feb. 12, 2026, expressing his enjoyment of his morning shift at Kennevale and Cedarview. In the letter, he wrote about recognizing children, parents, and senior pedestrians, noting his own experience caring for elderly relatives.

Amanda smiled as she noted Peter used "rant" instead of "ramble." She explained that being a crossing guard was more than a job for him; it helped him build confidence despite his social anxiety disorder.

A Lasting Legacy

The vigil concluded with a moment of silence, as the community pledged to remember Peter Clark's dedication and warmth. His presence on the streets of Barrhaven will be deeply missed.
