Security officers at the Bank of Canada in Ottawa and Montreal are poised to strike. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the largest union representing federal public servants, gave notice Thursday, June 18, that bargaining units representing the security officers will strike as of June 23 unless they can reach a negotiated agreement with the Crown corporation.
According to a PSAC news release, the action follows ongoing bargaining efforts in which the parties have been unable to move forward on key issues, including wages, working conditions and workplace protections. Earlier this month, members voted unanimously in favour of strike action, the union said.
“Security Officers at the Bank of Canada perform critical work to protect national financial infrastructure, yet their concerns continue to be met with inadequate movement at the bargaining table,” Ruth Lau MacDonald, Regional Executive Vice-President of PSAC, said in a written statement.
The union represents about 60 security officers at the Bank of Canada, most of whom are based out of Ottawa, according to a PSAC web page. A small contingent is located in Montreal. The Ottawa Citizen contacted the Bank of Canada for comment but did not immediately hear back.
