Access PEI Launches Pilot Project at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Access PEI services start at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

A new pilot project is making provincial government services more accessible for Islanders at a major healthcare facility. Starting this week, Access PEI services are being offered at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Charlottetown.

Services Come to Patients and Staff

The initiative aims to provide convenience for hospital patients, visitors, and staff who need to handle provincial government transactions. The services are being offered on-site as part of a limited-time pilot project to test demand and feasibility in this unique setting.

Two experienced staff members, Danny Callaghan and Shawn Harvey, have been assigned to operate the temporary Access PEI location within the hospital. They will be available to assist with a range of standard Access PEI services, which typically include driver licensing, vehicle registration, and other provincial permits and identification.

Evaluating a New Model of Service Delivery

The pilot project represents an innovative approach to bringing government services directly to where people already are, rather than requiring them to travel to a standalone office. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, as one of the province's busiest public buildings, presents a strategic location to reach a large number of citizens.

The success and public reception of this pilot, which began on January 15, 2026, will be closely monitored by the Government of Prince Edward Island. The data collected will help inform future decisions about potentially expanding similar service points to other high-traffic public institutions across the province.

Convenience During Healthcare Visits

For individuals with appointments at the QEH or those visiting loved ones, the new service offers a chance to efficiently complete government errands in one trip. It also provides a valuable resource for the hospital's large workforce, who can now access these services during their workday without leaving the premises.

While the pilot is currently focused on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital location, its outcomes could pave the way for a broader rethinking of how and where Access PEI delivers its essential services to Island residents.
