The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have reported that over 800 driving charges were laid in just one week across northeastern Ontario. The enforcement blitz targeted what officers call the 'big four' traffic offenses: seatbelt use, distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding.
Details of the Enforcement Campaign
According to a police infographic released on social media, the charges were laid between May 17 and May 23, 2026. The campaign aimed to reduce collisions and fatalities on regional roads. Among the charges, speeding violations accounted for the largest portion, followed by distracted driving and impaired driving offenses.
Seatbelt Violations
Police also issued numerous tickets for seatbelt non-compliance, emphasizing that proper restraint use can save lives. Officers conducted checkpoints and patrols throughout the week.
Community Impact
The OPP reminded drivers that road safety is a shared responsibility. They urged motorists to obey traffic laws and avoid risky behaviors. The high number of charges underscores ongoing concerns about driver behavior in the region.
