Ex-Trump Aide: White House Lawyers Prepping for Dem Win Is Telling

A former White House aide for Donald Trump has explained why it is a telling sign that lawyers at her old workplace are reportedly preparing for a Democratic-controlled Congress ahead of November's midterm elections.

Sarah Matthews, who served as White House deputy secretary in Trump's first term, said on Tuesday's MS NOW that the administration sees the writing on the wall. They know the midterms will be brutal for them, she added.

Matthews, a Trump critic since resigning after the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, noted that midterms historically favor the party not in power. She said voters feel a lot of buyer's remorse, having been bamboozled by Trump's failure to deliver on promises to lower prices and be a peace president. Instead, she argued, he has done the complete opposite.

She argued that the administration knows it will be held accountable if Democrats flip the House, and there is a very good chance they could also flip the Senate, which would mean trouble for the Trump administration.

Her comments follow a Washington Post report that the White House Counsel's Office is arranging private briefings on how to prepare for significant Democratic wins in the fall. An unnamed official said it is obvious to everyone that the GOP could lose at least one chamber. Sources told the Post that staffers have urged political appointees to be careful about what they put in writing and advised them on how to respond to congressional inquiries in a timely manner.

Matthews said she believes the administration is worried not just about investigations but also about hiding something. She cited alleged corruption, handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and the killings of Renee Goode and Alex Pretti. She concluded that there is a plethora of things Democrats could investigate, making it sensible for White House lawyers to prepare for a new Congress.
