Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi has accused Alberta Premier Danielle Smith of playing a 'very strange game' in the ongoing referendum saga regarding the province's potential secession from Canada. Speaking to reporters, Nenshi expressed concern over the political maneuvering surrounding the referendum, which he described as divisive and unnecessary.
Nenshi's Criticism
Nenshi, who served as Calgary's mayor from 2010 to 2021, stated that Smith's approach to the referendum question is 'very strange' and lacks transparency. He argued that the premier is using the issue to distract from more pressing matters facing Albertans, such as healthcare and education. 'This is a very strange game that the premier is playing,' Nenshi said. 'Instead of focusing on real problems, she's pushing a divisive referendum that doesn't have broad support.'
Referendum Background
The referendum, which asks whether Alberta should remain part of Canada, was approved by a legislative committee earlier this week. Smith has been a vocal advocate for the vote, citing grievances with federal policies on energy, climate change, and equalization payments. However, critics argue that the referendum is a political stunt that could undermine national unity.
Political Reactions
Federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has stated that all Conservatives will campaign for Alberta to stay in Canada, while other opposition leaders have condemned the referendum as irresponsible. The NDP has called for a focus on collaboration rather than separation.
Nenshi's remarks add to growing criticism of Smith's handling of the issue. He urged the premier to abandon the referendum and instead work with other provinces and the federal government to address Alberta's concerns. 'We need leadership, not games,' Nenshi concluded.
