A 42-year-old woman has died following a residential fire north of Edmonton on Monday evening, according to Alberta RCMP.
Westlock RCMP responded to a report of a house fire in the village of Clyde, Alberta, just before 9 p.m. on Monday, police said in a news release issued Tuesday.
Upon arrival, officers encountered heavy smoke and secured the scene while fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her manner of death is pending determination by a medical examiner.
RCMP Corporal Teri-Ann Bakker confirmed that the fire investigator, in collaboration with Westlock RCMP, found no evidence of arson. However, the cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
“When RCMP members arrived on scene there was already heavy smoke. RCMP did contain the scene, while (fire) crews put out the fire,” Bakker said.
The woman was the sole occupant of the home at the time of the fire, although she shared the residence with her partner, who is now receiving support from victim services. Fire crews took several hours to bring the fire under control and fully extinguish it.
Clyde is located approximately 81 kilometers north of Edmonton in Westlock County. No further details have been released at this time.
