Port Alberni, B.C. – A suspicious fire was extinguished in Port Alberni early Sunday morning, despite an active burn ban in the region. The fire, which involved a pile of debris, was intentionally set behind the Walmart on the city's south side.
Fire crews responded to the scene in the early hours of Mother's Day. The debris pile was fully involved when firefighters arrived, but they were able to contain and extinguish the blaze quickly. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.
The Port Alberni Fire Department confirms the fire is considered suspicious and has been turned over to the RCMP for investigation. The area remains under a burn ban due to dry conditions, making any open burning illegal. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact local police.
This incident comes as the region faces heightened fire risk, with officials urging residents to adhere to fire restrictions. The investigation is ongoing.
