The Town of Stonewall has launched a legal challenge against the Rural Municipality of Rockwood, alleging that quarry approvals near its boundary were granted unlawfully. The town filed a lawsuit in the Court of King's Bench, seeking to quash the approvals and halt operations at the site.
Stonewall officials argue that the approvals violated provincial regulations and failed to consider environmental impacts and community concerns. The quarry, located near the town's border, has raised worries about groundwater contamination, noise, and traffic.
In a statement, Stonewall Mayor Sandra Smith said, "We believe the approvals were not only improper but also detrimental to our residents' well-being. We have a duty to protect our community."
Rockwood Reeve John Doe defended the approvals, stating that all procedures were followed correctly. "The quarry meets all regulatory requirements, and we are prepared to defend our decision in court," he said.
The legal action highlights ongoing tensions between municipalities over resource extraction and land use. A court date has not yet been set.
