A staff sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service has been charged with assault following an off-duty incident in Oakville.

Staff Sgt. Walt Lushman will have no public-facing duties while the matter is investigated, the OPS said Friday.

The OPS issued a news release stating that Lushman had been charged by the Halton Regional Police Service after an alleged dispute related to a two-vehicle collision on the night of June 12.

After being charged, Lushman was released from custody with conditions, the OPS release said, adding that the matter remained under investigation by Halton police.

Additionally, an investigation has been initiated by the OPS Professional Standards Unit under the Community Safety and Policing Act.

“The OPS holds all officers to a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty, and expects their actions to reflect the trust and values of the community we serve,” the statement added.

According to Ontario’s “Sunshine List” of public-sector compensation, Lushman was paid slightly more than $200,000 in salary and benefits in 2025.
