Hamilton Police have intensified efforts to combat excessive speeding and aggressive driving following a deadly weekend that saw three fatal crashes and four fatalities on city roads. Authorities reported that multiple drivers were intercepted during a targeted enforcement initiative after being caught driving at what they described as 'extreme' speeds, posing serious risks to themselves and others.
Immediate Roadside Penalties Issued
Officers issued immediate roadside infractions, including licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments, to remove dangerous drivers from the road and prevent potential tragedies. Among the most serious incidents, a 36-year-old Hamilton man was clocked traveling over 100 km/h above the posted 70 km/h limit on Wilson Street West in Ancaster while allegedly racing another vehicle. Police stated they 'safely intervened' to bring the situation under control.
Teenager Stopped at 147 km/h
In another case, a 17-year-old driver was stopped on Centennial Parkway in the city's east end after being recorded at 147 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. When confronted, the teen reportedly told officers he was simply 'going to the mall.' Additionally, a 27-year-old motorcyclist was pulled over on Rymal Road East after exceeding the 60 km/h limit by more than 55 km/h, and a 23-year-old Hamilton man was stopped on the Red Hill Valley Parkway for driving 138 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
Chief Warns of Real Danger
Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen emphasized the gravity of such behavior. 'These speeds are not just numbers; they represent real danger. Every time someone chooses to drive this way, they are putting lives at risk,' he said in a news release. Each driver cited faces a 30-day licence suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment, and potential substantial fines, demerit points, and additional driving prohibitions upon conviction.
Weekend Fatal Crashes
The enforcement blitz followed a series of fatal collisions over the weekend. On April 17, a motorcyclist died after colliding with a pickup truck near Concession 5 and Kirkwall Roads in the rural Rockton area. Hours later, another fatal motorcycle crash occurred in the Harlowe-Pritchard Roads area of the city's southeast end. Early Sunday morning, a male driver and a female passenger died in a single-vehicle crash on Claremont Drive, which splits from the Claremont Access at Upper James Street.
Police urge drivers to slow down and make responsible choices to save lives and prevent serious injuries, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility. 'Targeted enforcement will continue across the city with a focus on reducing high-risk driving behaviours and keeping Hamilton's roads safe for everyone,' authorities stated.
