Edmonton Recreation Facilities Open for May Long Weekend

The May long weekend is approaching, and Edmonton's recreation facilities are ready to offer a variety of fun events and activities for residents and visitors. Despite a cold and cloudy forecast, the city has announced that all 21 recreation and leisure centres will be open throughout the weekend, with regular hours on Saturday and Sunday and statutory holiday hours on Monday.

Poolside Fun and Activities

Several of the city's pools and leisure centres will feature special operating hours and discounted prices. Eastglen Leisure Centre will host a $2 public swim on Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with inflatables available on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Monday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. General admission applies for other activities. Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will offer a family public swim on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring an inflatable obstacle course and multi-sport activities for all ages.

Splash Day at City Hall

The city will also host a free Splash Day at the city hall fountain on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include indoor performances and programming at city hall, games, the fountain (weather permitting), music from DJ Seaglass, and entertainment by Sangea Academy.

Entertaining and Educational Options

For those seeking indoor events, the John Walter Museum will be open on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission. Visitors can take a tour, learn pioneer skills, or enjoy a day in the river valley. Fort Edmonton Park reopens on Saturday, offering an immersive experience from the midway to vintage streetcar rides. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Weather Considerations

The city noted that fountain operations and outdoor programming may be cancelled if temperatures drop too low, but indoor programming will continue as planned. According to Environment Canada, Saturday has a 30% chance of showers and a high of 7 C, Sunday will be a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 12 C, and Monday will be sunny with a high of 14 C.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these offerings and enjoy the long weekend despite the cooler weather.
