ByWard Market boosts security for summer 2026 after recent incidents
ByWard Market ramps up security this summer 2026

The ByWard Market in Ottawa is ramping up security this summer, implementing additional patrols and enhanced surveillance to address safety concerns following recent incidents in the area. The measures aim to create a safer environment for the thousands of visitors and residents who frequent the popular downtown district.

Increased patrols and surveillance

According to the ByWard Market District Authority, the enhanced security plan includes more visible police presence, additional private security guards, and expanded use of CCTV cameras. The initiative comes after a series of incidents, including a shooting in a downtown Toronto apartment that left a woman dead and a man arrested, as well as a two-vehicle crash in Brampton that sent three to hospital with two in critical condition.

“We want everyone to feel safe and enjoy everything the Market has to offer,” said a spokesperson for the authority. “These additional measures are proactive steps to prevent trouble and respond quickly if needed.”

Community response

Local business owners and residents have expressed support for the increased security. Many noted that while the Market is generally safe, recent high-profile incidents across the city have raised concerns. The authority also plans to work closely with Ottawa police to coordinate patrols and share intelligence.

The ByWard Market is one of Ottawa’s top tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors annually. The summer season is particularly busy, with outdoor patios, street performers, and festivals drawing large crowds.
