Barrie School Faces Backlash for Replacing Canadian Flag with Pride Flag
Barrie School Backlash Over Pride Flag Replacement

A Barrie elementary school is facing significant backlash after temporarily replacing its Canadian flag with a Pride flag to mark Pride Month. The move has ignited a heated debate on social media, with many expressing strong opinions on the decision.

Social Media Reactions

Online reactions poured in after Trillium Woods Elementary School removed its Canadian flag and hoisted a Pride flag earlier this month. By June 16, the Pride flag had been taken down and the Canadian flag was restored at half-staff. A Reddit user commented, “It’s this type of stuff is why people are ripping down pride flags. I don’t agree with it but the more authority pushes something the more people are going to push back.” Another Reddit user stated, “Nope….. ONE flag. No foreign flags, no pride flags.”

Similar sentiments were echoed on X. One user wrote, “Nope. I appreciate and respect our LGBTQ friends and family but we are Canada first. Raise the rainbow on a 2nd flag pole, as well as any additional groups.” Another X post said, “Absolutely not! Nor should any other flag. The Canadian flag I grew up with was inclusive of all Canadians, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or any other snowflake label you give yourself.”

School Board Policy

According to the Simcoe County District School Board’s policy, another flag may be raised under certain circumstances. The policy states, “Upon the direction of the Director of Education, or designate, a single flag, other than the National Flag of Canada may be raised for a specific time to recognize an event, occasion or period of significance.” The Toronto Sun contacted the school board for comment but did not receive a response to an email request.

Alternative View from Catholic Board

The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board clarified that taking down the Canadian flag is not its policy. In a written statement, the board said, “The Canadian flag flies on our flag poles. Our schools have been provided with Pride and Every Child Matters flags, which are displayed in prominent ways throughout our buildings. Flags are just one of many ways that we demonstrate to our students that our spaces are safe and welcoming.”

Legal Requirements

Under Ontario’s Education Act, all schools in the province are required to display the Canadian and provincial flags inside their buildings. Schools are also permitted to fly the Canadian flag on flagpoles outside. The incident has raised questions about the balance between inclusivity and national symbols in educational settings.
