Windsor police have taken a suspect into custody in connection with a string of deliberately set dumpster fires that occurred over the weekend. The arrest brings a swift conclusion to an investigation that began with reports of a person igniting waste receptacles in the city's core.

Fires Set Near Gas Pumps and City Bin

According to the Windsor Police Service, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Ottawa Street on Saturday, January 7, 2026, after receiving a report of an individual setting fires in trash containers. Upon arrival, police discovered a City of Windsor waste bin actively on fire. An officer, with the assistance of a local resident, quickly worked to extinguish the flames, preventing further damage.

Investigation Leads to Arrest

Through their initial response and subsequent investigation, police determined that the suspect had allegedly set multiple fires in waste receptacles located between gas pumps at a nearby business. The individual is then believed to have moved to the intersection of Ottawa Street and Parent Avenue, where the city waste bin was set alight. Police located and apprehended the suspect shortly after the incidents.

Charges Laid Against Local Man

A 37-year-old Windsor man now faces serious charges in relation to the arson spree. He has been charged with three counts of arson causing property damage. Additionally, he faces one count of failure to comply with a probation order. The accused is being held pending further legal proceedings.
