Windsor Driver Charged in Fatal Crash That Killed 15-Month-Old Toddler
Ontario Provincial Police have formally charged a Windsor motorist with multiple counts of dangerous driving following a tragic multi-vehicle collision in Kingsville that claimed the life of a 15-month-old child. The charges come two months after the fatal incident occurred on a busy stretch of Highway 3.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The crash took place on the morning of March 9 at the intersection of Highway 3 and County Road 31 in Kingsville. Emergency services, including members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services, and fire departments from Kingsville and Leamington, responded to the scene of the three-vehicle accident.
Paramedics rushed one individual to hospital with a Windsor police escort, with officers blocking intersections to ensure the ambulance had a clear and expedited route. Tragically, a 15-month-old boy succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the medical facility.
Injuries and Investigation
A 33-year-old woman driving an SUV involved in the collision was treated at hospital for serious injuries. Three occupants from other vehicles involved in the crash received treatment for minor injuries. Following the incident, police shut down a two-lane stretch of Highway 3 between County Road 34 and Morse Road while investigators from the OPP traffic management enforcement unit conducted their examination.
County Road 31 was also closed between County Road 18 and Mersea Road 3 for several hours as authorities worked at the scene. Investigators had previously appealed to the public for any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage that could assist with the investigation.
Criminal Charges Filed
The OPP released a statement on Thursday confirming that a 58-year-old Windsor motorist now faces four criminal counts: one count of dangerous operation causing death and three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
