Calgary police have made significant progress in their investigation of a brazen jewelry store robbery that occurred last month in the Dalhousie neighborhood, resulting in the arrest of two suspects while a third remains at large. The incident, which took place on January 8, involved a violent break-in that caused substantial damage and resulted in the theft of valuable jewelry.
Details of the Robbery and Arrests
According to police reports, three masked individuals entered the jewelry store located on Dalhousie Drive N.W. on January 8. The suspects used hammers to smash open multiple glass display cabinets, quickly gathering the jewelry inside before fleeing the scene. A fourth individual was reportedly standing outside the door acting as a lookout during the robbery.
The group escaped in a black pickup truck that authorities later confirmed was also stolen. Following an extensive investigation, the Calgary Police Service arrested two Calgary residents in connection with the crime.
Charges Against the Arrested Suspects
The first suspect, 44-year-old Jonathan Michael Orgill of Calgary, faces multiple charges including one count of robbery, one count of breaching a release order, and one count of possession of stolen property valued at over $5,000.
The second arrested individual, 30-year-old Austin James Florell, also from Calgary, has been charged with one count of robbery, one count of being disguised with intent, one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000, and four counts of breaching a release order.
Both men are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, February 25, to face these charges.
Third Suspect Still Being Sought
Police continue to search for 44-year-old Joed Leonard Smith, another Calgary resident who remains at large. Smith has been charged by warrant with one count of robbery, one count of being disguised with intent, and one count of fraud under $5,000 in connection with the same incident.
Authorities have released a description of Smith to aid in his apprehension. He is described as standing 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 198 pounds, with a bald head, blue eyes, and numerous tattoos covering his body.
Financial Impact and Investigation
The Calgary Police Service estimates that the total value of stolen jewelry combined with the damage to the store amounts to approximately $200,000. This significant financial impact has made the case a priority for law enforcement officials.
Video footage that appeared to capture both the robbery and its aftermath circulated on social media platforms shortly after the incident occurred. This footage, along with other evidence gathered during the investigation, contributed to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
